What is the matter with the Americans that they are so obstructive to a National Health Plan?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

All of Europe have a Health Service. Only the Health Business-world and the selfish could oppose a Health Plan.

They just can’t understand the whole idea of a society all pitching in and helping each other as they are taught that people should only care about themselves/their own loved ones and if your neighbour can’t afford medical treatment, tough sh*t. He must have made "bad choices" or something. . .

Its just American selfishness, greed and "me me me" attitude (they call it "self reliance" but its more "selfishness").

The big fear is that they might have to – gasp – pay more taxes or they won’t like the Health Care available on the National system. The fact that they will still have the right to use private healthcare if they wish (just as we do in the UK) seems to escape them.

I guess its just that they don’t care – they’re happy to see sick people suffering in pain as long as its not them, they just rationalise it away by blaming the sick person for "being too lazy to get a good job" or whatever. . . .

They object to their "hard earned money" being taken by Government to pay for other people’s care but they are happy for their "hard earned money" to be taken by a greedy profit-motivated Health Insurance Company to pay for the CEO’s big fat salary and yacht in the Bahamas. Can you understand that? Me neither.

And they watch too much Faux News and beleive the blatant lies about European Healthcare Systems such as our NHS.

Thank God I live in the UK . . .

Can I file for a marriage license and a domestic partnership at the same time for health plan coverage?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

My partner and I have filed for a marriage license in San Jose, California. It was suggested to me by my work supervisor that we also file as domestic partners to get my partner onto my health plan coverage, which has language that covers domestic partners but not same-sex marriage. Can this be done and, if so, how does one go about it?

it sounds like double dipping to me

CNN Highlights GOP Web Video on President’s Health Plan

Monday, March 1st, 2010

http://gopleader.gov CNN highlighted the new web video released yesterday by House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) about President Obamas health care plan. The video is lighthearted, but one that underscores a serious point Congressional Democrats will hear throughout August as they travel outside of Washington: Americans want lower health care costs not a trillion-dollar government takeover of health care that increases costs and puts Washington bureaucrats in charge of medical decisions that should be made by doctors and patients.

Could someone tell me how a high deductible health plan works?

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

I am confused with regards to how a high deductible health plan works, please help!

A High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) is a plan that conforms with IRS guidelines. It is used in conjuction with a Health Savings Account (HSA). As the name suggests, the deductible (the amount you pay before the insurance kicks in) is relatively high, but that means the premiums are lower.

Under federal law, the minimum deductible in a HDHP plan is $1,100 for an individual and $2,200 for a family. The advantage of an HDHP is that you can shelter up to $2,850 for an individual or $5,650 for a family per year from state and federal taxes in a Health Savings Account (HSA). You cannot use the tax-free money to pay the premium, but you can use it to pay the deductible and your part of co-insurance. Depending on your tax bracket and where you live, that could save you as much as $2,539 in taxes per year, assuming a combined tax rate of 44.95%—9.3% in state income tax (California), 28% in federal income tax, and 7.65% in Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax. In other words, you increase your buying power by 45% by using tax-free dollars to pay your deductible, rather than using dollars with taxes taken out.

The contributions you make to an HSA are yours to keep, rolling over from year to year. The funds remain untaxed as long as you use them to pay medical expenses or withdraw them after age 65. The funds earn interest on a tax-deferred basis. Think of it as an IRA that you can use to pay out-of-pocket medical expenses.
