Will Lawmakers Sign Up for Government-Run Health Care Plan They Support?

Friday, March 19th, 2010

7/16/09 – Rep. John Flemming (R-LA): Under the current draft of the Democrat health care legislation, members of Congress are curiously exempt from the government-run health care option, keeping their existing health plans and services on Capitol Hill. If Members of Congress believe so strongly that government-run health care is the best solution for hard working American families, I think it only fitting that Americans see them lead the way. Public servants should always be accountable and responsible for what they are advocating, and I challenge the American people to demand this from their representatives.

How do you Union people feel about Obama taxing your health plans?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

So much for no middle-class tax hikes, huh?

LOL. Union employees are so stupid. They vote in Obama and with his first major legislation it’s the Unions who are going to get hit the hardest. Since I oppose Obama and unions in general, I guess if health care reform passes I can at least comfort myself with the knowledge that all these union workers are getting it right in the ass.

You really shouldn’t be so quick to find satisfaction in your point. In fact, since NO ONE, including 92% of the very Congress that voted this nightmare this far, have NO clear picture what is in and what is out. Reid and Pelosi have managed to keep it out of prying eyes, so ANYTHING, anybody says about it, is "hearsay" for now.

And I do believe you WILL find you are wrong, with the final version. Obama and Congress have EVERY intention of providing exactly what they have all along in the House and Senate versions. Unions WILL recieve "subsidies" or "special exemptions" to offset the costs. You really think Obama won’t pay his "IOU" to the Unions ?

John Mccain’s terrible Health Care “plan” vs. Obama

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Lost in the economic crisis, the lousy horserace numbers for McCain, and the personal attacks of the McCain camp is the ongoing health care crisis in the United States. With our current system, there remain 47 million without care and millions more who are underinsured. Cost issues exist alongside inequalities of care access. And now, with unemployment rising, the issue is becoming more acute.
Paul Krugman: Conservative Republicans still hate Medicare, and would kill it if they could — in fact, they tried to gut it during the Clinton years (thats what the 1995 shutdown of the government was all about). But so far they havent been able to pull that off.

So John McCain wants to destroy the health insurance of nonelderly Americans instead. But but Not good. Obama’s idea is different. Today, he signed on to the Health Care for America Now principles, which do not endorse specific legislation, but are compatible with single payer and other approaches. From a press release:

Today, Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) signed the Health Care for America Now statement declaring that he is on the side of quality, affordable health care for all and opposed to leaving Americans on their own with unregulated health insurance.

There’s still plenty of room to argue about the best way to get there, but with a recession looming and people in danger of losing their jobs, this is not an issue that can be ignored any more. Expect it to be brought up in the town hall debate tomorrow – unlike the phoney stuff being brought up by McCain’s campaign and his increasingly shrill VP candidate, who caters only to the shrinking Republican base, this is an issue that all Americans actually care about.

“Health Care for America Now’s goal this year is to get the next President and a majority of Congress committed to the principles of quality, affordable health care for all and opposed to policies that would tax our benefits at work and leave us on our own with the unregulated, bureaucratic private insurance industry,” said Richard Kirsch, National Campaign Manager, Health Care for America Now. “With Senator Obama’s signature, we are taking a major step towards getting the next President and Congress to make comprehensive health care reform a priority in 2009.”

John McCain’s plan is anything but acceptable. Since it’s all about saving money and nothing else, he proposes, according to the WSJ: McCain Plans Federal Health Cuts…Medicare, Medicaid Spending Would Be Reduced to Offset Proposed Tax Credit

Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Sen. McCain’s senior policy adviser, said Sunday that the campaign has always planned to fund the tax credits, in part, with savings from Medicare and Medicaid. Those government health-care programs serve seniors, poor families and the disabled. Medicare spending for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30 is estimated at $457.5 billion.

Those of us who analyze health policy and trends for a living have struggled to follow John McCain’s health plan through its many seemingly-improvised changes. First he was taxing health benefits through both payroll and income tax. Then he said he only intended to apply income tax, which meant that his plan would create even larger deficits. Now he says there won’t be deficits, because he’s going to make up the cost of those tax credits by slashing Medicare and Medicaid.

When a candidate suddenly, almost whimsically changes the way he proposes to handle $1.3 trillion – which is the amount of money his plan puts in play over the next ten years – it’s time to get nervous.

We already knew the McCain plan was going to cost most Americans money (in at least three different ways.) Now we know it could jeopardize their medical care when they get older, too. The end result of this off-the-cuff planning could change the way Americans receive, or don’t receive, medical care in this country…at least three kinds of health “tax increases” (more accurately described as increased personal cost) under the McCain plan: a “slow bleed” for people who retain coverage as the tax credit falls behind inflation, a $,7000-plus spike for people who lose their coverage immediately, and an increase in out-of-pocket costs (and denials, etc.) for people who still have insurance. What do we get in return? According to that neutral study, three million uninsured would gain coverage – briefly. After five years the number of uncovered would go up.

Does anyone know of good websites for comparing health care plans?

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

I am looking for health care in the Washington DC area and wanted to know if there is a good website with which I could compare the costs, benefits, etc of different health care plans

There is a great book I just purchased called "Healthcare for Less" by Michelle Katz. I got my copy off Amazon for about $10. I have found that the websites are rather "opinionated" and it really depends on what you need and want. This book helped me ask the right questions, suggested great websites, and I got a whole month of medication for free by calling one of the numbers she mentioned in the book! I wound up getting an HSA after reading the book and it is the best plan for me!!!!

USA is finally backing universal health care; how do our plans compare with those of international ones?

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Particularly in democratic debates we are exposed to some of the US’ first practical proposions on universal health care. On a global stage, the US is playing catch-up. What are some of the better examples of universal health care plans from around the world already in existance and what can the US learn from these international examples?

The plans that are proposed are not enough.

I live in the UK, and work in the NHS (our universal healthcare system). Our basic rate of tax is 20%, not 50%. Our system can be better, but do not believe the lies posted above my answer.

In western Europe, health outcomes of the healthcare systems are better than that of the USA. Look at under five death rates. If you get care in the USA, you get good treatment, but a healthcare system is about prevention as well as cure.

Health Care Reform

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

MC Howie weighs in on the health care debate with Nurse Linny.

Lyrics:

CHORUS
Health care reform why the is it taking so long?
Health care reform I know its important, but its so boring
Health care reform howd our country get it so wrong in the first place?
Health care reform but I like that show House with that actor Hugh Loring

We spend more on health care than any other nation
But you know how low were ranked by the World Health Organization?
Were at number 37 are you serious – its true
Even coke snorting Colombia is number 22!

But the cost of our health care is as high as it gets
Youre better off buying a cat and getting meds from a vet
When you go to the doctor, you pay so much for so little
Its like ordering a steak but getting served Tender Vittles

For a laugh, I put on the Fox News Channel
Sarah Palins still talking bout death panels
Now shes a health care expert in her low cut blouse
Cause she can see a hospital from right outside her house

CHORUS
Health care reform why the is it taking so long?
Health care reform I know its important, but its so boring
Health care reform howd our country get it so wrong in the first place?
Health care reform I couldnt film outside yesterday cause it was pouring

When you start a job, you gotta choose a health plan
All these choices and their acronyms are crazy man
You got HMO, PPO, HDHP
How the am I supposed to know which one is right for me?

And at the start of the year I gotta choose the amount
I wanna put in my flexible spending account
Will someone please tell me how Im supposed to predict
How much my plans not gonna cover when I get sick?

Deductibles, co-pays, and premia
I just need help with my hypoglycemia
And if all that aint enough to make ya go mental
You gotta pick another plan for your dental!

CHORUS
Health care reform why the is it taking so long?
Health care reform I know its important, but its so boring
Health care reform howd our country get it so wrong in the first place?
Health care reform I really hate that hospital linoleum flooring

All this partisan crap, just wastes so much time
Holding up the process for the party line
How can they be expected, to be respected
When all they care about is getting re-elected

All I care about is that Im protected
If with the H1N1 I get infected
Dont want my claim to be rejected
If the wrong health plan I done selected

Public option, public option
All Im hearing about is this public option
Will it make things better, or will it have glitches?
I dunno, but make a choice, and make some new law, bitches!

CHORUS
Health care reform why the is it taking so long?
Health care reform I know its important, but its so boring
Health care reform howd our country get it so wrong in the first place?
Health care reform sleep in the other room if you dont like my snoring

Why do conservatives object to tax caps on health care plans?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

For starters, cons, the caps was McCain’s plan.

Secondly we need not some $8000 cap, we need 0$ cap, that is the end to tax subsidies of health care. Once health care plans are no longer tax deductible, the employers will abandon group plans, and give you the cash instead. You will have to buy you insurance in individual market.

Individual market was never subsidized by tax deductions. The result (according to CBO) is that individual health insurance plans cost ony one third to one half of group plans.

There shouldn’t be any tax cuts for anything. Why should the government make me pay more because of the way I choose to live?

If you rent instead of buying a house, you pay more taxes. WHY? How is a renter ever supposed to afford a home when he’s paying more in taxes?

If you have kids, you pay less in taxes, yet use more government services (schools, school busses on the roads, parks, etc.). You should pay MORE when you have kids.

The list goes on and on.
