what is the difference between HMO insurance and PPO insurance?

hmo – there is no coverage for out of network services, unless approved prior to receiving them. there is a co payment for some services.

ppo – there is a slightly higher reimbursement rate for using in network providers, but you can use out of network as well. ppo usually has a deductible and co insurance of about 70/30 up to 90/10.

An HMO usually (unless it’s an Open Access plan) requires referrals to see specialists. A PPO does not.
